Expansive demolition agent – meaning, function and use
Expansive demolition agent is the clearest English name for this product group: it states both the mechanism – expansion – and the purpose – demolition – without implying that the material is an explosive.
What does the term mean?
An expansive demolition agent is a mineral powder that is mixed with water and poured into pre-drilled holes. As it hydrates, the material increases in volume and builds up an extremely high expansion pressure inside the borehole. Rock and concrete resist compression well but are weak in tension, so the material cracks along the line of the boreholes.
The term covers the whole product group, whether it is used in a quarry, in concrete demolition or in dimension stone work. BETONAMIT® is an expansive demolition agent for the controlled demolition of rock, stone and concrete.
Where does the name come from?
The wording comes from technical literature rather than from the trade. „Expansive“ describes the chemically driven increase in volume, „demolition agent“ describes the job the material does.
The word „agent“ was chosen deliberately instead of „explosive“: an explosive releases its energy in milliseconds, an expansive demolition agent builds pressure over several hours. The name therefore describes the effect without suggesting a detonation.
Where is the term used?
The term is used in specifications, method statements, technical data sheets and safety documentation across the UK, Ireland, North America, Australia and international projects written in English.
It is the wording most often chosen where the document has to be precise – by consulting engineers, safety officers and manufacturers.

Is the term technically unambiguous?
Yes. Expansive demolition agent is the most unambiguous of the common English names. It describes the working principle correctly and cannot be confused with other building material groups.
This is why KUBATEC BMT AG prefers it in English. Names such as cold blasting agent or silent blasting powder are widely understood, but they place the product close to explosives, which is neither legally nor technically accurate.
How does the product work?
The powder is mixed with water into a pourable slurry and poured into the drilled holes. Over several hours the chemical reaction produces an expansion pressure of several thousand tonnes per square metre.
That pressure acts radially on the surrounding material, opens cracks and separates rock, natural stone or concrete – with no detonation, no vibration, no flying debris and no noise.
