KBT Protect

KBT PROTECT – universal impregnation

Long-term protection of absorbent surfaces with a strongly water-repellent lotus effect.

Product

One product for many surfaces

KBT PROTECT Logo

KBT PROTECT is a universally applicable impregnation for the long-term protection of absorbent surfaces. The product penetrates deep into the substrate and provides a strongly water-repellent effect without significantly altering the appearance of the treated surface.

The resulting lotus effect significantly reduces water absorption while also making it harder for dirt to adhere. As a result, surfaces stay clean for longer and are sustainably protected against moisture, dirt and weathering.

The particular strength of KBT PROTECT lies in its versatile application. With a single product, a wide variety of absorbent materials such as concrete, natural stone, artificial stone, façades, plaster, brick or wood can be treated. This makes KBT PROTECT suitable both for professional applications in the construction industry and for numerous applications in the private sector.

KBT PROTECT was developed in Switzerland and is manufactured to high quality standards. The development focused on simple application, reliable performance and as broad a range of applications as possible. Application is straightforward: KBT PROTECT is applied or sprayed onto the dry, absorbent surface and can then penetrate into the substrate. Elaborate follow-up treatment is generally not required.

Protection

When should surfaces be impregnated?

Constant moisture and shade create ideal living conditions for moss and various types of algae. Rain, ice and snow challenge materials in every season, and north-facing walls or poorly sunlit areas are affected most. Water that has penetrated freezes in winter, expands and causes cracks – allowing even more moisture and dirt to enter day after day.

KBT PROTECT was developed to penetrate deep into the material and prevent further absorption of water and dirt. The treated area stays protected for a long time, so premature deterioration, renovation or even replacement can be postponed with minimal effort – long-term protection lasts up to 5 years.

Impregnating concrete

Concrete surfaces are protected in an environmentally friendly way, counteracting algae and moss growth in the long term. Applications are almost unlimited because concrete is everywhere: exposed concrete and walls, concrete furniture, stairs, retaining walls and paving stones.

Protecting wood

Used for wooden benches, fences or posts that are permanently exposed to rain and damp. Weathering and rotting can be delayed by many months or even years.

Façades and plaster

Outdoors in particular, where façades regularly meet dirt and splash water, impregnation pays off: the plaster stays dry and clean. Areas with high moisture exposure are protected preventively, making mould growth much harder.

Treated or untreated

The difference is visible

On impregnated surfaces water beads off and dirt or algae barely get a hold. Untreated concrete absorbs moisture, darkens and greens over time – the images below show treated and untreated areas side by side.

Application

How to apply and re-treat

Application

KBT PROTECT can be used on almost all absorbent surfaces. The ambient temperature during application should be no lower than 10 °C and no higher than 40 °C. The surface should be as clean, dust-free and dry as possible; loose adhering contamination must be removed beforehand.

Apply generously by spraying, rolling or brushing – enough material until full saturation is reached. On vertical surfaces always work from the bottom upwards. Consumption is 100–200 ml/m² depending on absorbency, and the material needs 1–3 hours depending on temperature until full protection is reached. No visual changes are expected; for sensitive projects we recommend test areas.

Re-treatment

Surfaces stay protected for several years after treatment. Important: the lotus effect does not define the protection – reappearing dirt or other visual changes do.

Once the effect fades, simply apply KBT PROTECT again without any preparation and the protection is restored. Because there is no visual change, partial areas can be re-treated without any problem.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about KBT PROTECT

+How does the lotus effect of KBT PROTECT work?

KBT PROTECT is a water-based impregnation using chemical nanotechnology. Anti-adhesive components give the surface an invisible, hydrophobic and oleophobic protection: water and dirt bead off instead of penetrating the pores.

+How much material is needed per square metre?

Depending on the absorbency of the substrate, consumption is 100–200 ml/m². Apply enough material until full saturation is reached.

+Does the appearance of the treated surface change?

No visual changes are to be expected – the surface stays matt and visually unchanged. For sensitive projects we still recommend test areas.

+How long does the protection last and when is a re-treatment needed?

Surfaces stay protected for several years – long-term protection of up to 5 years. The end of protection is not indicated by the lotus effect but by dirt reappearing. For re-treatment, simply apply KBT PROTECT again without any preparation, even on partial areas only.

+At which temperature can KBT PROTECT be applied?

The ambient temperature during application should be between 10 °C and 40 °C. The surface must be clean, dust-free and dry; depending on temperature the material dries within 1–3 hours.

+Is KBT PROTECT environmentally friendly?

KBT PROTECT is a water-based solution free from toxic chemicals and without odour emissions. It is developed and manufactured in Switzerland.
